"The Dream-quest of Vellitt Boe" by former local Kij Johnson is both a World Fantasy Award nominee and a Shirley Jackson Award nominee, in both cases in the Novella category.

The Year's Best Science Fiction: 34th (ed Dozois) reprints "Checkerboard Planet" by Eleanor Arnason and "Touring with the Alien" by former local Carolyn Ives Gilman. Its "Honorable Mentions: 2016" include "Zombies in Winter" by Naomi Kritzer; "Vishnu Summer" by David Prill; and two stories by Kij Johnson: "Coyote Invents the Land of the Dead" and "The Dream Quest of Vilett Boe."
